Gardiner, Montana Gardiner, Montana Location of Gardiner, Montana Location of Gardiner, Montana County Park Gardiner is a census-designated place (CDP) in Park County, Montana, United States, along the 45th alongside.

Gardiner was officially established in 1880, but the region has served as a chief entrance to Yellowstone National Park since its creation in 1872.

Parks' Fly Shop, one of the earliest fly shops and guiding operations in the Yellowstone area, was started by Merton Parks in 1953.

Yellowstone National Park Heritage and Research Center, which opened May 18, 2005, is positioned in Gardiner, MT and homes National Park Service archives, Yellowstone exhibition collections and reference libraries. The name Gardiner derives from Johnson Gardner, a fur trapper who directed in the region in 1830-31.

Originally, titled Gardner's Fork, the river took on Gardner's name although prospectors and explorers who visited the region later in the century were unaware of the trapper Johnson Gardner.

In 1870, when the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition passed through the region they began calling the river Gardiner a phonetic error.

When the Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 passed through the Gardiner area, they encountered two men, titled J.C.

These company doers eventually established a primitive hotel at Mammoth and were not evicted from the region until many years after the park was established. Mc - Cartney also went by the name Jim Gardiner and received messages, consignments and such destined for guests of his hotel addressed to: Jim on the Gardiner.

On February 9, 1880, a territorial postal service was established just outside the park boundary and Gardiner, Montana began. In 1883, the Northern Pacific Railway instead of the extension of their Park Branch Line from Livingston, Montana to Cinnabar north of Gardiner.

In 1903, the line was extended to Gardiner. Railroad service to Gardiner was discontinued in 1948.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP has a total region of 3.9 square miles (10 km2), of which, 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) of it is territory and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) of it (2.32%) is water.

Climate data for Gardiner There were 497 housing units at an average density of 131.3 per square mile (50.8/km ).

The average homehold size was 1.96 citizens and the average family size 2.73.

In the CDP, the age of the populace was spread out with 20.8% under the age of 18, 2.9% from 18 to 24, 40.5% from 25 to 44, 28.0% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the CDP was $30,125, and the median income for a family was $46,071.

About 3.4% of families and 8.2% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 4.8% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
